Healthy watersheds play a critical role in supporting fish, wildlife, and communities across British Columbia. In 2025, prolonged dry periods, wildfire risk, and intense rainfall events highlighted the importance of restoring and protecting wetlands and streams.
In response to these growing climate concerns, the BC Wildlife Federation’s Watershed Team has continued to advance restoration and education initiatives designed to strengthen watershed resilience. A key focus of this work is implementing nature-based solutions that work with natural watershed processes. Through wetland restoration, fish habitat improvement, and restoration techniques that mimic natural systems such as beaver activity, the team helped restore ecological function across watersheds throughout British Columbia.
This work was carried out in collaboration with a wide range of partners, including First Nations, environmental organizations, stewardship groups, landowners, and local communities. Alongside on-the-ground restoration, the program delivered grassroots, community-focused workshops and field-based training that build the knowledge and skills needed for long-term watershed stewardship.
These efforts improved wetland health, strengthened stream channels, and enhanced watershed function in ways that help landscapes better withstand drought and high-flow events, while also building local capacity for watershed stewardship across British Columbia.
Together, these projects contribute to cleaner water, healthier wetlands, and more resilient watersheds for communities across the province.
