SUMMARY:Galiano Island Process-Based Restoration Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The B.C. Wildlife Federation is bringing a free watershed restoration workshop to Galiano Island. Join us for this 2-day workshop on Low-Tech Process-Based Restoration (LTPBR)! Learn how hand-built instream structures can be used to restore floodplains by increasing habitat complexity\, addressing stream erosion\, improving floodplain connectivity and groundwater storage\, improving habitat for fish and wildlife\, and increasing the resiliency of the landscape to drought and wildfire. \n\n\n\nDate: August 8-9\, 2026 \n\n\n\n\nSaturday August 8 – 9 AM to 4:30 PM\n\n\n\nSunday August 9 – 9 AM to 4:30 PM \n\n\n\n\nWhere: Galiano Island\, BC \n\n\n\nCost: FREE ($100+ value)This workshop is a mix of hands-on fieldwork and in-class presentations that provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to implement LTPBR practices. Participants will gain hands-on experience in building Beaver Dam Analogues (BDAs) and Post-Assisted Log Structures (PALS) at Beaver Creek. Topics that will be covered include:  \n\n\n\n\nThe basics of Low-Tech Process Based Restoration (LTPBR)\n\n\n\nHow to identify suitable sites for LTPBR\n\n\n\nConstructions of BDAs and PALS\n\n\n\nPost-restoration monitoring & maintenance\n\n\n\nPermitting & funding\n\n\n\n\nDue to the hands-on nature of this workshop\, participants must be comfortable in and around water\, walking on steep\, vegetated\, uneven and waterlogged ground\, lifting heavy objects\, and operating hand tools (such as loppers). This workshop is being undertaken in partnership and with the financial support of the Galiano Conservancy Association\, Wildlife Habitat Canada\, the Royal Bank of Canada\, and the Government of BC.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» \n\n\n\nAccommodations:   \n\n\n\nParticipants travelling from off-island are welcome to camp at the Galiano Conservancy’s Millard Learning Centre. Tent camping is available at the Frontcountry campsite\, with 18 mulched and raised tent pads and a covered picnic area. Campers will also have access to the Classroom building\, located adjacent to the campsite\, which includes a full kitchen\, washrooms\, showers\, and WiFi. The kitchen is fully equipped with a refrigerator\, freezer\, microwave\, induction stove\, oven\, coffee maker\, dishwasher\, and all necessary cookware\, including pots\, pans\, utensils\, cutlery\, and dinnerware.The cost of camping\, including Classroom access\, is $30 per night per tent pad. SUMMARY:Fort St. John Wetland Ecosystem Services Protocol-BC (WESP-BC) Training
DESCRIPTION:Join us for field-based training in using the Wetland Ecosystem Services Protocol for BC (WESP-BC) to assess the important functions and values of wetlands! Gain a better understanding of how wetlands function ecologically\, and how those functions matter for people\, ecosystems\, and infrastructure within their specific landscape context. WESP-BC is a standardized rapid function assessment method for non-tidal wetlands in BC. Outcomes of WESP-BC will support alignment with the Government of B.C.’s management goals for wetlands. \n\n\n\nWESP-BC is appropriate for the wetland generalist with the skills\, knowledge\, and expertise necessary to complete a rapid wetland function assessment. This course is suitable for consultants\, planners\, environmental/conservation groups\, government representatives\, First Nations\, and engaged community members. Prior knowledge in wetland classification and delineation is required.This TWO-DAY course will introduce participants to the Wetland Ecosystem Services Protocol for BC (WESP-BC)\, a rapid assessment tool used to evaluate wetland condition\, function\, and benefits. Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on fieldwork\, participants will gain hands-on experience applying WESP methods\, including site planning\, mapping\, and data collection across wetlands of increasing complexity. By the end of the course\, participants will be able to confidently complete WESP-BC assessments and interpret results to support wetland management and decision making.  An optional virtual session will be hosted after the workshop covering post-field desktop assessment and data analysis.  \n\n\n\nWhen: September 9\, 2026 – September 10\, 2026 (days will run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM) \n\n\n\nCost: BCWF Member: FREE/Non-member: $50Sign up for a BCWF Membership here!  \n\n\n\nWhere: Classroom sessions & field training will occur near Fort St John.
